Privacy Notice and Consent

This notice explains how your personal information will be collected and handled through the State of the Environment (SoE) report Engagement Hub platform.

The Commonwealth Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (DCCEEW) is currently preparing the next SoE report for release in December 2026.

Why are you receiving this notice?

You are receiving this notice because DCCEEW will collect, use and disclose your personal (including sensitive) information collected through the Engagement Hub platform to deliver the SoE report.

The State of the Environment (SoE) report combines scientific and First Nations knowledge to assess the state of Australia’s environment. It aims to help shape policy and action, influence behaviours, and assess our actions as stewards of the Australian environment. The Commonwealth Government is required to deliver a SoE report every 5 years under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (Cth) (EPBC Act).

What personal information will be collected?

We will collect the following personal (including sensitive) information about you:

• Your name and email address,
• Your phone number (if required);
• The organisation/s you are representing (if applicable);
• Areas of expertise / interest;
• Details about your cultural background, such as your First Nations identity; and
• Your opinions regarding SoE report content, design and approaches.

How will your personal information be used and disclosed?

We will collect and use your personal information provided through the Engagement Hub to:

• Build and update the SoE report mailing list;
• Contact you with updates and information about the SoE report; and
• Facilitate stakeholder engagement to inform and deliver the SoE report. 

Your personal information may be disclosed to other Commonwealth Government staff that are involved with supporting the delivery of the SoE report.

Your personal information will be handled in accordance with the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) and the DCCEEW Privacy Policy.

You can choose not to provide the requested information.

You can choose to participate anonymously or use a pseudonym. You can also choose not to provide your personal information; however this may mean that it will not be possible for us to engage further with you regarding the SoE report.

This privacy notice explains how your personal information may be handled by DCCEEW in relation to the SoE report.

If you decide to provide your personal information through the SoE report Engagement Hub, you are taken to have consented to your personal information being collected and used in accordance with this notice.
