The 2026 SoE Report is designed to help Australians understand how our environment is faring, why changes are happening, and why this is important. It focuses on 3 key questions to provide a clear, evidence-based picture of the state of Australia’s environment.

1. What is the current state of the environment?

The report outlines the condition of Australia’s environment by looking at our ecosystems, native species communities and heritage places. It tracks changes over time using the best available public data. It highlights where our natural systems are in good condition and where they are under pressure.

2. Why is the environment in this state?

The report examines factors that affect and change the environment. Pressures identified as national environmental concerns include:

  • habitat loss, fragmentation and degradation
  • invasive species
  • fire
  • climate change and severe events
  • pollution, and
  • resource extraction.

3. Why is this important?

It considers how pressures interact and accumulate, and the effect of environmental change on people and the economy.

The 2026 SoE Report helps people make smart choices about using and looking after the environment. A common evidence base helps people to protect and care for the environment now and in the future.
