What is the Australian State of the Environment Report?
Australia’s State of the Environment (SoE) Report is a national assessment that brings together science and data as well as First Nations perspectives to provide a big-picture view of the health of our environment. It helps track how our natural systems are changing over time and what that means for communities, ecosystems, and the economy.
The report is released every five years and is a requirement under Australia’s national environment law, the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999. It offers an evidence-based assessment of Australia’s air, land, water, coasts, and biodiversity, along with key pressures and responses.
By making this information accessible to all Australians, the report encourages more informed choices and better environmental stewardship for future generations.
The next State of the Environment Report (SoE26) is due to be provided to the Minister for the Environment and Water in December 2026.
