What is the Australian State of the Environment Report?
Australia’s State of the Environment (SoE) Report is a national assessment that brings together the best available science, data and First Nations knowledge to provide a comprehensive picture of the condition of our environment. It helps track how our natural systems are changing and what that means for communities, ecosystems and the economy.
The SoE provides an evidence-based assessment of Australia’s air, land, water, coasts and biodiversity, along with key pressures and responses.
The report is currently released every five years under Australia’s national environment law, the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999.
The next State of the Environment Report (SoE26) is due to be provided to the Minister for the Environment and Water in December 2026.
Following reforms to national environmental laws, future reports (2028 onward) will transition to a two-year reporting cycle. The Independent Head of Environment Information Australia will be responsible for producing those reports.
By making this information accessible to all Australians, the report encourages more informed decisions and better environmental stewardship for future generations.
