We are developing the 2026 State of the Environment (SoE26) Report. Our approach draws on expert advice, including recommendations from the 2020 Samuel Review as well as feedback from users of the 2021 report.

Previous SoE reports provided a wealth of information, but users told us they could be overwhelming because of their size and complexity. SoE26 is more streamlined and accessible. Users will find it easier to navigate, understand what’s changing, and see how Australia’s natural systems connect.

These updates ensure that SoE26 remains credible and evidence-based, while providing a more useful and holistic understanding of Australia’s environment. This will help more Australians to take informed action to care for Australia’s environment.
