We have started preparing the 2026 SoE Report. Our approach is based on expert advice, including recommendations from the 2020 Samuel Review, as well as feedback from users of the 2021 report.

While previous SoE reports provided a wealth of information, users told us the reports were sometimes overwhelming because of their size and complexity. The 2026 report will be more streamlined and accessible. Users will find it easier to navigate the information, understand what’s changing, and see how Australia’s natural systems are linked.

The updates will ensure the 2026 SoE Report is credible and evidence-based, while providing a more useful and wholistic understanding of Australia’s environment. This will help more Australians to take informed action to care for Australia’s environment.
